Couple in BDSM pose Woman with handcuffs on and man holding her from behind

Introduction

In advance of exploring Dominance & Submission, it is important to know what you partner enjoys. We therefore recommend that you first read the Sharing Your Kinky Fantasies Guide and begin the journey of exploring your respective fantasies together. If you have read it, but have not yet fully opened up to your partner, do not worry, there is plenty of time to open up over the course of your kinky play. You may also discover that more fantasies will come to mind as you further explore and engage in kink with your partner.

It is also worth reading the Kinky Time Glossary of Terms, as some of the concepts are fundamental to understanding and practicing dom/sub activities.

Are you aSwitch?

So what is a “Switch” exactly?

Most of you will know what is meant when a person identifies as a “Dominant” or a “Submissive”, however a “Switch” is a less familiar term. A Switch is someone who switches these roles, as they enjoy certain aspects of both domination and submission. They may enjoy spanking their partner over their knee (Dominant), and also enjoy being tied up and teased (Submissive).

A Switch may also be a natural submissive, but will occasionally take the dominant role to please their partner who is also submissive and vice versa. There are many reasons why people switch up their roles, and if both partners enjoy submission, or both partners enjoy dominance, there will need to be some switching going on at some point.

Dominance

If you consider yourself dominant, think of the aspects of domination that get you really excited. Begin to think about the specifics. For example, let us say that you like the idea of restraining someone, start thinking about where your partner is being restrained in your fantasy. What locations are they being restrained in? What is it that excites you about that location or scenario? How are they being restrained? Are you using rope, stockings, tape, handcuffs, leather straps or something else? Really start letting the fantasy flow, but take mental notes to remember the details.

Whether it is restraining your partner, inflicting pain on them, creating fear and taunting them, shaming them with humiliating tasks, or simply controlling them, whatever your “thing” may be, the chances are it is an expression of your dominance. “Dominance” is the overarching umbrella term that covers all of these activities, a desire to dominate in whatever manner that excites you. It is ultimately these desires that will be at the core of the activities you do whilst undertaking your kinky play.

Submission

If you consider yourself a submissive, use the same process as above, think about what aspects of submission you like. Maybe you like the idea of being “owned” by your partner who is playing the role of a master or mistress? Get specific, in what way would you like them to express their ownership over you, would you like to wear a collar and be on a leash? Would you like to be their sex slave for a night? Would you like to be punished physically by your master or mistress?

Whatever aspects interest you and whatever specific activities you think you might enjoy, these are most likely to be an expression of your own particular style of submission.
